Moore River News
Since 2007 the Department of Transport, (formerly the Department for Planning and Infrastructure) has been liaising with members of various community groups concerned with the increase of vessel traffic and associated activities within the Lower Moore River location.
Following discussions from a public meeting held at Guilderton in April 2009, the Department will be introducing a set of reforms to assist with the management of activity on the river to mitigate the risks of interaction between all users. These are:
• Closure of navigable waters in the vicinities of Diamond Island, Silver Creek and the river mouth to motorised vessels.
• Blanket closure of Moore River to Skiing including Personal Water Craft
• The placement of a number of speed restriction buoys at strategic location along the river to promote compliance to the existing 5 knot speed limit including the installation of buoys on the approaches to the area known as the desert, this system will be trialled and reviewed after a period of 12 months.
• The upgrade of signage to be located at each of the boat ramp.
Compliance patrols on the Moore River will also be increased. The Marine Safety Education van visited the main boat ramp on the 26th November as part of the boating safety education program. Another visit will be programmed for early 2010.
The works are scheduled to begin on the 9th of December 2009.
Please be advised that Marine Safety has a web site for the public to notify incidents and lodge complaints is at: http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/19590.asp#incident
