Moore Paddling
A Guide to exploring Moore River estuary by kayak or canoe
“I know of nowhere else in the world where it is possible to experience a close approximation to pre-settlement conditions - how the Swan estuary would have looked at the time of European Settlement.”
Professor G Seddon, Jan 1996
Moore River estuary is a beautiful, unspoilt wilderness only an hour's drive north of Perth.
Slow-down, linger awhile, listen quietly, look around....... and be inspired with what this remarkable environment has to offer.
The estuary offers year round paddling for up to 12 kms between the rivermouth and Boobabie Bridge. Water levels will vary by as much as two metres depending on whether the rivermouth sandbar is open or closed.
A further 3 to 9 km is navigable for experienced paddlers on good winter rains further upstream - from Lancelin Road bridge and Neergabby.
Consider sunrise, sunset or moonlight paddling for a special experience.
Moore River access points
Guilderton boat ramp / Moore River Foreshore
Access river adjacent to boat ramp (some congestion in peak season) or via steps at river foreshore. Located close to Visitor Centre, General Store, Caravan Park and Café Amoore. A fitting finale to enjoy a coffee or light meal with a rivermouth view. Toilets, changerooms / showers, barbecues and picnic tables at forshore.
Silver Creek (Guilderton)
Access via Moore River Drive (turn left at entrance to village) A less crowded, kayak friendly access point with ample parking. No amenities.
Woodridge Boat Ramp (Barragoon Road)
12 – 15 minutes by car south of Guilderton. Access from Lancelin Road via King and Barragoon Roads, Woodridge (6km south of Guilderton turnoff) or via Caraban Road (4km south of Guilderton turnoff). Caraban Road takes you past the historic King family homestead, built in 1865.
A beautiful approach through the overhanging tuarts with shaded parking areas adjacent to the boat ramp. No toilet / changeroom amenities.
Note: no public access at Boobabie Bridge
Little or no river flow in summer months normally makes upstream paddling relatively easy.
Lancelin Road Bridge
2 km south on Lancelin Road from Guilderton turnoff. Carparking, toilet and picnic tables. Pathway access swimming spot in bend of river.
For experienced paddlers, as strong moving water moves through partly drowned trees and branches.
